We're finding from feedback that a growing number of folks are looking for a multi-purpose trailer, rather than a dedicated camping trailer. This makes sense; a trade-off of driving a smaller vehicle is reduced space. If you only need extra space sometimes, a trailer is a great way to go. Use it for a camping adventure one weekend, and then for a run to your local building supplies store or pick up your new couch the next week.
This alternative to a usual popup trailer is a very budget
friendly way to upgrade from sleeping on the ground for
camping. It gets you into a tent trailer for at least half
the price of a traditional one. On top of that, the
versatility of its “sport utility” nature has the added
benefit of being many trailers in one.
The starting point for this approach is normally a utility trailer. If you already have one, this becomes
an even more budget friendly way to get into a Tent Topped Camping Trailer. There are many types, sizes and
styles to choose from. Personally I like smaller 4x6 sized trailers.
For most folks, a trailer with fixed side provides the most flexibility. Mounting of a tent unit on top is as simple as drilling four holes and bolting it on. With trailers that are 4’ wide, the Tent Unit acts as a lid.
A good way to organize your gear for multi-purpose Tent Topped Camping Trailers like the one above is with storage containers such as Rubbermaid Action Packers. Doing this also has the added benefit of keeping your gear together and making it easy to find.
Here is a utility trailer we did with flashy aluminum diamond platform side panels, with tent units mounted a few different ways.
You could also start with a flat bed trailer, and then build a removable Explorer Box or similar camping unit for it. Another approach for flat bed trailers is making a rack on the front for your Tent Unit that ATVs or motorcycles would fit under.
Here is another idea, this is a Tent Topped Camper a customer made using a pickup bed trailer for towing off-road behind his FJ Cruiser.
