These tents units were originally developed for back country expeditions and safaris in places like Australia and South Africa and are referred to as 'Rooftop Tents'.  They make the perfect dry, comfortable sleeping quarters for camping adventures.  Usually the first question people unfamiliar with these tents ask is, why?  Here are the main advantages of a Trailer / Car Top Tent verses a ground tent:

  • The built-in flat sleeping surface translates into no clearing rocks and branches or digging and grading out a level spot.  Anywhere you can pull in; you can have a flat, level sleeping surface.
  • Getting off the ground moves you out of the critter zone.  No more surprise visitors like coons, skunks, snakes and ants in your tent.
  • In rainy conditions, no more worrying about the strange “natural attraction” run-off has for ground tents or digging protective moats.
  • Tents stay cleaner when off the ground and out of the dirt. Have you ever setup camp in the dark only to be dealing with the mess of an old fire pit too close to your tent in the morning?
  • Packing up your tent is almost as fast as, setting it up.

Integrated Tent System:

We’ve been working on a tent design that would use the top of the trailer box as the bed area and attach permanently to the trailer.  We’re taking a modular approach, with a main tent sitting on top of the trailer with an awning over the side.  Then, if desired, we can add a sitting/changing area that zips onto the awning.  We are currently finalizing the design and shopping for a manufacturer.  (Note: pictures shows tent without its planned rain fly.)
